Running Events All Over the Globe: The New York City Underwear Run

Runners are generally serious people with Type-A personalities, the kind that find motivation in the chase of perfection. They normally enjoy structure and relish the chance to evaluate themselves by their wristwatches. Rigid training schedules format their day so as not to allow anything to disrupt their much needed run. Yet, on some rare occasions when the pressures of competition and training become too much, runners can let their guard down, and, in the case of the New York City Underwear Run, their pants too!

Held annually the Friday evening prior to the New York City Triathlon, the Underwear Run contains approximately 500 highly motivated fun seekers who clad themselves only in their skivvies. Bodies of all shapes and sizes adorn little more than a smile and a positive attitude as they bounce, shimmy, and glide through the world’s most famous park. Sports bras and bikini briefs. Boxers and boy shorts. Pink ones and black ones. Lace and elastic. Traditional and downright bizarre. If you wear it under your day clothes or just in the darkest hours late at night, you’ll see it trekking through Central Park in all its glory.

Leave your modesty at the door if you elect to dive into this ocean of flesh and cotton. The 1.7 mile run, which in 2009 broke the world record for total people gathered in one place in their underwear, winds through the tree-lined streets of Central Park, drawing plenty on onlookers and an impressive number of cell phone cameras. With no timing chips, no transitions, no race numbers, no fancy gadgets or gizmos, the run represents the heart of the Big Apple’s approach to life: personal expression to the greatest conceivable degree. Absurdity and fun don’t get any better than this.

So, if you are interested in a run as memorable as any, or if you simply want to figure out exactly what Victoria’s secret actually is, go to http://www.nyctri.com/Central_Park_Underwear_Run.htm for additional information and pictures of last year’s race. You may want to train for this one and eat a few less cookies though. Failing to do so may bring about a whole new definition of indecent exposure. Not to worry, however, as next year’s race is a ways away…on July 14th at 7:30 pm.

Outdoor Summer Recreational Activities: Marathon Running

Marathon running is a great outdoor activity for the summer. Not only do many proceeds go toward worthy causes, but they also are great exercise. Depending on the location, you might view mountaintops, seaside waves, or the hustle and bustle of city life.

Marathon running is not just for the pros. There are varying levels of experience and even kids can participate in some marathons. From mini-marathons to those that will take you miles, many cities have a variety to offer, especially during the summer months. Some might even consider venturing to a nearby city or state to experience something different. Don’t discount traveling abroad. If you live in the United States, you might even consider going to run a marathon in France or Jamaica. If traveling abroad may already be in your summer plans, check to see if the country you’re visiting has a marathon at that time. This could make a summer vacation even more interesting.

Preparation for running a marathon should include preparing the body for such an extensive workout. It’s one thing to run a block after the dog and yet another to go the distance of a marathon. Ask your health and fitness professional what’s right for your body. Not everyone will have the same recommendations.

The day of the marathon, you should be dressed in comfortable running shoes and lightweight clothing. Generally, you’ll want a form-fitting (but not tight) t-shirt and some running shorts. If it’s windy, you may also need a lightweight windbreaker – again form-fitting, but not tight. Even though a shirt and shorts is often the best choice, you should still check the weather forecast for the area and dress accordingly.

Some marathons provide drinks and snacks, while others do not. It’s important to bring plenty of water and also portable snacks for energy. Energy bars often are chosen for marathon runners as they are small, but filling and energizing. Other snack choices might include peanuts, trail mix, and granola bars. All of these are easy to carry in small places, yet have plenty of nourishment to last throughout the race.

Marathons and Triathlons All Over the Globe: Reggae Marathon

If you’re into both reggae music and running, why not combine the two? In the Reggae Marathon, you can. This annual event takes place on the coastline of Negril, Jamaica. Beginners and professionals alike can get in on the competition and entertainment of the Reggae Marathon.

Considered one of the world’s finest beaches, the tropical atmosphere of Negril is appealing to many. The Reggae Marathon includes a full marathon and a half marathon event. The course leads through the village and offers beautiful scenery of green pastures and plant life. While this is a fairly mild course open to participation from beginners, any marathon event requires some training beforehand. With that in mind, before the event, start looking for the best gear for the race and try it out while you are training. This way, when you get to the actual event, you will be comfortable and can concentrate on the race.

Negril, Jamaica has a tropical climate. Weather, for the most part, is warm and humid. Therefore, thin, breathable clothing will be beneficial. Short sleeves and thin running shorts are ideal. When considering clothing, think about pockets, as plenty of pocket-sized hydration packs will be handed out at various stations. These consist of a water and Gatorade mix. Also, don’t forget the sunscreen. It helps if clothing is treated with sun protection .

Shoes for this event should have good grip for running , but not too thick. Thicker traction is best for snowy and icy conditions, none of which you will find in Negril. Running shoes for the Reggae Marathon also should be lightweight, so as not to weigh the feet down. Besides, you likely will want to hear the drums in the blaring Reggae music, rather than the pounding of your shoes on the pavement.

Breathability is a must in running shoes for a Jamaica marathon. Because of the hot and humid weather, precaution against feet getting too warm is a must. This means socks also should be thin and breathable. If your hair is long, consider a bun or ponytail to keep from getting hot.

Marathons and Triathlons All Over the Globe: The Youth National Championship

Who says kids can’t be adventurers, too? The Youth National Championship is held annually in Colorado Springs, Colorado. There are separate events, according to age group and experience. Children ages 7 – 15 can participate in marathons and triathlons suited to their skills.

The Youth Triathlon is for kids aged 7 – 15. For this particular triathlon, no prior triathlon experience is required. This is a great race for beginners because it is non-drafting and anyone can participate. Activities for 7 – 10 year-olds include the 100-meter swim, 5K bike and 1K run. Kids aged 11 – 15 will instead do the 200-meter swim, 10K bike and 2K run. Even though it is for beginners, kids should still have some type of pre-training, just so that they are prepared for this type of activity.

For kids with a little more experience, there are the Youth Elite National Championship Race and the Junior Elite National Championship Race. These triathlon races are for kids aged 13 – 15, who have had prior experience. Both are draft-legal races. The swim, bike and run are more challenging than in the Youth Triathlon.

For all of these events, kids will need the right shoes and the right gear to help them go the distance. Triathlon-quality shoes should be sturdy, flexible, comfortable and lightweight. They also should have plenty of skid-proof traction, as well as shock absorption. Clothing for running and biking should be comfortable and keep the skin dry and cool. Clothing should be lightweight and snug. The child should be able to move freely in the clothing, while gaining protection at the same time.

For swimming events, choose suits that are snug and protect against the sun. There are suits that are specially designed for shielding against the sun. These would be great for outdoor competitive events, such as those at the Youth National Championship.

Parents, don’t be afraid to try out various clothing and shoes while your child is preparing for this type of event. This will ensure that when the time comes to compete, your child is in optimal comfort and protection.

Marathons and Triathlons All Over the Globe: The Rock 'n' Roll Marathon

Think you can run a marathon or triathlon? How about the Rock n’ Roll marathon? This event in San Diego, California, features bands and the chance to dance at various points throughout the race. There also are cheerleaders along the way to keep the runners and dancers motivated.

This annual event is for runners of all experience levels, so don’t let inexperience stop you if you’re revved to go. Those 2,000 cheerleaders and the 19 aid stations will help keep you going. Can’t run? That’s alright. This race also is open to walkers. The point of this race is to have fun while also supporting a cause. To run a race like this, don’t forget that you’re going to need some practice ahead of time to warm your body up, especially if this is not something you do on a regular basis.

Since you’re going to be doing a combination of dancing, walking, and running, be sure your footwear will be helpful for all three of those. Running socks are a great choice, as they help draw moisture away from the body. They also can be treated with antibacterial properties to keep odors and fungus at bay. Because you will be running, dancing and walking, you’ll want a shoe that not only is built for running, but is lightweight and flexible enough for the dancing and walking. Generally, you should look for running shoes , but they should be a variety that is lightweight, flexible and contain plenty of shock absorption and support.

Once you’ve chosen your ideal socks and shoes for the event, also be sure you’ve got some good running clothing. It should be lightweight and breathable, built to wick away moisture. All that running, walking and dancing can build up quite a sweat, but if you wear the right clothing, much of that can be prevented.

For pre-practice, consider jogging around your neighborhood, stopping at intervals to dance to your favorite MP3s. Neighbors might point and stare, but so what? If so, let them know what you’re doing and invite them along. The more, the merrier, right?

Training for a Marathon: Prep Your Mind to Run the Next Race

Remember when “The Secret” came out? For those of you who don’t know, it was a book promoted about Oprah that encouraged people to use their thoughts and words to improve their life. Of course, it was a hit worldwide. Why? Intrinsically, everyone knows that how they think affects everything. This fact is especially true when it comes to running a marathon.

When you train for a marathon, your mind has to be just as strong as your body. If you don’t believe me, check out the Zappos’ blogs that talk about record-breaking runners. All of the great runners learn to overcome either personal or physical weaknesses in order to win. It’s a part of life that no one can by pass. As a result, before your next marathon, you have to prep your mind.

You can prep your mind to help you run a marathon in two ways. One, you must visualize success. Two, you must tell yourself and others you can do run the full race. Start this process a few months prior to the actual marathon. Here’s how to do it:

Imagine Success
Sit daily for a few minutes in a quiet place. See yourself running the course of the marathon and then see yourself crossing the finish yourself. Imagine yourself overcoming every obstacle that could get in your way like an aching knee, heat or weariness. Then imagine how you feel after accomplishing it.

Think and Talk like a Winner
When you talk about the marathon, let everyone and yourself know you will finish the course in record time. Think positively about it. Know that you can do it because of, or in spite of, past history. This type of mentality will keep you energized about the race.

So, are you ready to run the next marathon? I know your answer is “yes.” Prep your mind and you’ll be ready for the marathon.

Best Marathons: Lake District Mountain Marathon

Are you ready for another mountain top experience? For my sake, I hope your answer is “yes.” Why? Once again, I have details about another marathon that revolves around a mountain. To me, it’s starting to feel like a conspiracy, or that people just LOVE to run over hills and through valleys. Either way, the Lake District Mountain Marathon is par for the course.

The Lake District Mountain Marathon is located in the UK. This marathon has a lot of history. Not only is it a 40-year-old run, it also is known for being treacherous. Yes, this marathon is not for dainty runners. So put your tutus away and throw on a pair of hiking boots or cleats that can do double duty as running shoes. The Lake District Mountain Marathon is full of brush known to scratch one’s legs and rough paths designed to create blisters on your feet and hands. In other words, you have to be able to deal with rough terrain, and the great outdoors, in order to run it. Even if you take a compass, areas of this marathon lack visibility, so it may not do you any good. What is the benefit of running this particular race? Surviving it.

Runners who make it through the Lake District Mountain Marathon feel as if they can survive anything. It’s a feeling of pride that comes after doing something that 75 percent of the people you know can’t or won’t do. I believe this is the key motivation for people who decide to face off with the Lake District Mountain Marathon. They want to prove to themselves and the world how strong they are mentally and physically.

Are you interested in running a challenging race? If so, sign up for the next run. It won’t be until next year, which will give you plenty of time to practice. Start by going to an abandoned lot full of brush and mire. Then run through it for a couple of hours. It just might be enough to help you get ready for the opening day of the Lake District Mountain Marathon.
