Stresss Management Tips: Managing Information Stress

Each day we are exposed to thousands of images and sounds. These things are used to communicate information from one person or group to another. However, while we need these interactions with information on a daily basis, it is easy to become overwhelmed with the amount of information that is presented to us in the form of electronic media, printed media and auditory media. Overexposure to information can lead to information stress which can cause headaches, anxiety, paranoia and other socio-emotional problems. Fortunately there are several ways to manage information stress.

Control Your Exposure to Information

The first thing that you can do to manage your information stress is to control the amount of information you are exposed to each day. You can do this by selecting to avoid certain information sources and by limiting the amount of time you actively search for information that is not essential to your daily chores. By limiting how much exposure you have to information you will improve your mind’s ability to process the information that it is exposed to.

Find a Point of Balance

On a daily basis we actively and passively are exposed to information. Passive information gathering is done by absorbing information that is found in our environment. Information is found everywhere including billboards, television, radio and through conversations that we engage in directly or indirectly. Active information gathering occurs when we mindfully select to search for information.

In order to reduce your information stress you need to find a point of balance for your active and passive information gathering tendencies. This point of balance can be accomplished by giving your mind a break through meditation, nature hikes and other non-informational experiences. It can also be done by moderating your information gathering behaviors.

Meditation and Relaxation

If you are feeling overwhelmed by the amount of information that you are exposed to then you need to consider meditation. Meditation is a great exercise for mind relaxation. To practice meditation you will want to slip into comfortable clothing and a pair of cozy slippers . Then you will want to find a quiet spot that can be darkened. Relax, focus on your breathing and try to block out words, sounds and other sources of information. Do this for 15 to 20 minutes a day and you will notice your information stress level will be reduced.

Did You Know. . . ?

That Abbie Morris, a Lead in our fabulous CLT department, owns 15 pairs of slippers&= ? Neither did I, and I find it both scary and interesting at the same time. Abbie also owns 40, yes FORTY, bandannas WOW! In an effort to keep this on one page, today we will focus on Abbie’s slippers, though I cannot wait to spend some time focusing on the mass of bandannas that she sports. Abbie likes to create fun and a little weirdness with stats like these:

1.She will proudly go shopping in her slippers (like a hobo).

2.She has been addicted to slippers for all her life.

3.Her sister is worse than her (wow, I didn’t know weirdness like this runs in the family).

4.It drives their mom crazy (big surprise there).

5.She is impulsively driven to buy them. . . if she likes them, they are hers, even if that means skipping an actual bill that needs to be paid (now THAT is an obsession).

I couldn’t put this stuff into better words myself, so now I will share what Abbie herself has to say about this blatant craziness.

“A few years ago I could be defined as the girl who had a pair of slippers and a bandanna to match EVERY outfit . It I didn’t, I simply wouldn’t wear it. I own over 40 bandannas and probably 15 pair of slippers. I used to have a lot more but I’ve worn them out. That reminds me, I really need to get some more. My favorite pair has to be my Ohio State slippers that I purchased at Zappos.com (shameless plug). I’m from Ohio and my grandfather played for Ohio State so naturally I have to represent! Aside from those I have Marvin the Martian, Ugg , Old Friend , Acorn, long haired multi-colored (with and without sparkle silver accents), slipper socks of all kinds, solid colors in black, red, blue, and off white, Ohio State(used to have UC), and countless others that I couldn’t begin to name!”

Wow, what an adventure! Please enjoy the three pictures we have included that show Abbie with three of her favorite pairs of slippers, the Marvin the Martian slippers, multi-colored with sparkle accents, and her Ohio State slippers. Abbie, we hope your Ohio State slippers don’t run into my Siena slippers, I wouldn’t want there to be an upset.

Maternity Tips: Caring for Your Tired Tootsies

Shopping for shoes can be such a joy. So many styles, so many cute colors, and oh, look at those pumps. When you’re pregnant , though, it is NOT the time to invest in those sleek shoes with stiletto heels. Do you love those socks with the embroidered puppies and kittens on them? Well, yes, they’re adorable … but just how soft are they?

Here’s what to do to provide TLC (Tender Loving Care!) for your precious feet:
Choose shoes for their comfort level not their cuteness. The best time for shoe-shopping: mid to late afternoon. Your feet swell as the day goes on, and by that point in the day, you’ll be able to ensure that you buy shoes that are large enough. Look for low or no heeled shoes and make sure that the tread is secure. Consider looking in the athletic section for walking shoes, which typically offer better support than the average woman’s shoe. For example, consider New Balance’s top-rated walking shoes, such as the 622.

Sock it to your feet ... with the softest ones that you can find! Look for socks that are described as designed for comfort. And be sure that the material wicks moisture to avoid that nasty “my feet are perspiring” feeling.

When you’re home, consider switching to cozy slippers that soothe your feet. For example, Brampton by Crabtree & Evelyn is made of the softest faux suede, with full padding, which are highly rated by customers, and the ribbon lacing and bow on these slippers make it fun to wear!

Two words: foot massage. Treat yourself to an occasional foot massage at a day spa. Be sure to tell them that you are pregnant and ask them to use lotion that is for sensitive skin. In addition, next time your husband asks if there’s anything he can do for you, smile, hold up a bottle of massage lotion and prop your feet in his lap. Motto: togetherness means caring for each other’s tootsies!
